St Benet’s has been in existence as a Hall of the University of Oxford for well over a hundred years. A Benedictine Hall, it was founded in 1897 as a place for the monks of Ampleforth Abbey and other monasteries to live while they read for Oxford degrees. Today St Benet's Hall matriculates undergraduates and graduate students of all faiths and none into the University. St Benet’s is small yet with a global reach and great ambition to continue to build and grow. As an institution, it is focused on humanities and social sciences, both theoretical and applied, with an accent on shared values and public engagement.

As one of six Permanent Private Halls (PPHs) within the University of Oxford, St Benet’s is a warm and unique community that seeks to develop individuals who can accommodate multiple points of view and who therefore learn how to find solutions to intractable problems, based on active tolerance, rather than passive acquiescence. With 15 Fellows, St Benet’s is a small, welcoming, and inspiring Hall, home to c. 80 undergraduates and c. 40 graduates.

The Hall is inviting applications for the role of Master, to take up the post at the start of the academic year 2022/23. Candidates will possess a distinguished track record of achievement in their chosen field or profession and will share the Hall’s commitment to open dialogue, the pursuit of academic knowledge, and hospitality. The Master will lead the Hall in the exciting next phase of its journey, increasing our impact across the globe and ensuring that we are a key player and influencer in the role of faith, building on our interfaith work, including Catholic renewal. The Master should have sympathy for all faith traditions, and the Hall welcomes applicants of any faith or belief. Reporting to the Chair of the St Benet’s Trust, the role provides strategic and academic leadership for the Hall, leading in the community in a collegial and empathetic manner. The Master will bring leadership and vision to St Benet’s, supporting the community in charting this next phase of its future, with numerous exciting opportunities ahead.
