  • Report directly to the Executive Dean, Faculty of Health
  • Fixed-term, full-time basis for five (5) years based at our Kelvin Grove campus

The School of Psychology and Counselling

The School of Psychology and Counselling is an energetic School with an excellent teaching reputation, strong growth and success in its research profile and strong connections in the community.

The School houses the internationally renowned Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q). Through off campus affiliations, School researchers are based also at the Centre for Children’s Health Research (CCHR) and at QIMR-Berghofer.

The School has 3 clinics through which clinical training is provided based at the QUT Health Clinics – Psychology and Counselling, the Counselling and Family Therapy Services, and the Caroline Chisholm School, Student, and Family Support Centre.

The School delivers accredited undergraduate and Honours degrees in psychology, as well as accredited postgraduate studies in clinical psychology, educational and developmental psychology, and counselling.

Through the focus on real-world practice and applications, including work integrated learning opportunities, our graduates are prepared for a wide range of positions. The School has a large number of PhD and Master of Philosophy students across the multiple research sites.

We enjoy partnerships with government agencies, communities, universities, and health organisations in Australia and internationally.

About the Position

The Head of School, Psychology and Counselling will lead an exciting and vibrant school that is well connected locally, nationally, and internationally.

Sustaining and enriching partnerships is a key element of the Head of School position, consistent with the Faculty of Health strategy. Our strategic priorities include a stronger integration of learning, teaching, research and service and advancing inter-professional education within the Faculty.

This position is located at our Kelvin Grove campus. The proximity of the Kelvin Grove campus to hospital facilities at Herston provides the faculty with a distinct competitive advantage and a renowned precinct that offers transformative education, aligned biomedical research and industry engagement. Our Kelvin Grove campus is conveniently located about 3km from Brisbane's city centre, and boasts a range of shops, restaurants, markets, residential areas, and parklands.

Specific position requirements include:

  1. Highly developed leadership ability as demonstrated by success in achieving objectives and in contributing to improved organisational performance.
  2. Demonstrated experience in leadership and management of large-scale teams, facilities, resources, and impactful innovation.
  3. An internationally recognised record of excellence in research and/or scholarship.
  4. Proven capacity for strategic leadership of learning and teaching and academic research.
  5. Substantial skills in promoting and fostering collaborative interdisciplinary endeavours and to build partnerships.
  6. Evidence of effective responses to contemporary issues in higher education and health.
  7. High level communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive team culture and effectively interact with a range of staff in a complex operating environment.
  8. Sound knowledge of equal employment opportunity and equity principles and of the principles of workplace health and safety with a demonstrated commitment to implementation at both the strategic and operational levels.
