The University of Birmingham’s heritage as Britain’s first civic university is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in higher education. A comprehensive research-intensive institution with more than 8,000 staff, 38,000 students, over 350,000 alumni, turnover exceeding £750 million and securing over £200 million annually in research awards,  Birmingham has world-class strengths across the disciplines. Bringing original thinking, a clear focus and rigour, Birmingham is ranked in the top 100 universities globally and the top 20 in the UK.

The University’s new Strategic Framework: Birmingham 2030 sets out our ambition to be a global top 50 University. This builds on the last 10 years of Birmingham’s enhanced performance in research and education, of innovation and bold, sector leading initiatives, strong finances and investment, and an enviable reputation as one of the best led and run universities in the sector.

Recognising that the higher education environment is getting ever more competitive, we are taking the opportunity to review and enhance our approach to research support to create a strategically-focused Research Support Division, which is better able to respond to the needs of our industrial, policy and creative partners and delivers excellent services, and to support our researchers in embracing the opportunities of the changing research environment.

This new division, comprising c130fte professional roles, will bring together previously separate Professional Services’ teams and will be led by the new position of Director of Research Strategy and Services: a Senior Officer of the University reporting directly to the Registrar and Secretary and COO, Lee Sanders, and working closely with our new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge and Exchange), Professor Heather Widdows.

This is an extensive role with one of the widest portfolios of its kind in the sector. As well as being responsible for University-wide research support, the post will be a chief policy adviser on research strategy to the PVC (Research and Knowledge Exchange). The incoming Director will be active externally, working with international, national and regional policy-makers, Government departments, UKRI, Research Councils and research sponsors and partners. As with all our senior roles, they will be expected to be influential leaders in their external professional networks.

We require an experienced and intellectually confident leader to establish and lead the new division in supporting the new research vision of the University. If you share our ambition, are familiar with the research policy landscape, have the leadership ability to lead large teams and multi-faceted services, and possess academic empathy and political nous, we encourage you to get in touch.
