The National Football Museum (NFM) is England’s only national museum for football and at the heart of its practice holds a nationally accredited collection which is the largest of its kind in the world. Through the collections and associated community engagement and research programmes the museum explores why football is “the game of our lives” and the impact which it has on society. This includes permanent exhibitions which explore the history of the English game with both the national side and the English Leagues, and the museum’s special exhibitions and interactives, which stimulate stories about the impact of football. The museum’s collections are a resource not only for visitors but also academics and researchers. The NFM strives to ensure that the collection is fully representative and is working towards 50% of the collections representing the women’s game. The museum also aims to reinterpret football stories that represent significant moments and actions in popular culture and social history.

The NFM have come through the pandemic strongly having secured Culture Recovery Funding and have now negotiated a new long-term lease with Manchester City Council for the museum and a three-year grant. Looking ahead in July 2021 the NFM launched a new strategy and transformation project to redevelop the galleries, and as part of this new phase plan to refresh the board of trustees to reflect the cause of the charity to celebrate diversity and promote equality by providing opportunity for all to enjoy football culture.

To lead this new phase, we are seeking an exceptional candidate to fulfil the role of Chair who has the commitment, experience and attributes to help guide our organisation into the future. The new Chair will be an experienced, inclusive and thoughtful leader who is committed and forward-thinking and has a passion for culture and football and the impact they can have on society. A key objective is for the museum in 2023 to become an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and the new Chair will help support this application as well as engage with the social and cultural plans of our core funder Manchester City Council. We are looking for someone who can act as an ambassador for the organisation, in order to build networks and create partnerships which will enable us to achieve our ambitions. They will also combine a good business and commercial sense with an appreciation of how a charity works. The successful candidate will have experience of good governance and excellent chairing skills and will be given the opportunity to build a new team of trustees which can truly reflect the rich diversity of the football community.

The anticipated time commitment for the Chair role will vary but will include six board meetings per year, committee meetings as well as other activities outside of board meetings. This is a voluntary position, but reasonable out-of-pocket expenses are paid.

The NFM will be assisted in this appointment by global executive search firm Perrett Laver.
