The Alan Turing Institute

The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence (AI) whose mission is to make great leaps in data science and AI research to change the world for the better.

The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing (1912-1954), whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and AI. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data and algorithms.

Established in 2015 with five universities – Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick – and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as Founding Members, the Institute has grown significantly, adding eight additional university partners from across the UK – Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Queen Mary University of London and Southampton – and launching a number of major partnerships with industry and the public and third sector, including Lloyd’s Register Foundation, GCHQ and the UK Ministry of Defence, Accenture, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Now six years into its evolution, underpinned by world-leading academic excellence and bringing together academia, industry, the government and the third sector on a national scale, The Alan Turing Institute is a leader in the analysis and application of data science, algorithm research and AI.

The Role

The Alan Turing Institute now seeks to appoint a new Board Chair who will lead the Board of Trustees to ensure the continued success of the Institute during the next important stage of its development. The Board Chair will provide leadership and strategic direction for the Board of Trustees and to the Institute Director to ensure the Institute delivers on its vision whilst maintaining its obligations as a charity. The Board Chair will act as an ambassador and key public face of the Institute, promoting its activities nationally and internationally, enabling it to be recognised as a world leading centre of data science and AI.

The Person

Candidates will have proven experience in governance and board leadership, ideally gained through chairing a Board or in a non-executive capacity. The appointee will have experience of leading commercial and/or charity organisations through periods of technological innovation and will have the capacity for visioning and strategic thinking as well as the skills necessary to challenge and support the organisational leadership to deliver on the agreed strategy and objectives. The appointee will bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrable ability to build and develop effective working relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders across academia and the commercial, public and third sectors. The appointee will likely have an entrepreneurial spirit and will also demonstrate a clear commitment to setting the tone for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion throughout the Institute and more widely as the national institute for data science and AI. 

Terms and Conditions

The Board Chair will be appointed for an initial three-year term, with the potential for a further three years subject to performance review. The Board Chair is remunerated at a fee level to be agreed within the range of £40,000-£45,000 per annum. The role is expected to require a commitment of between 25 and 30 days per annum.
