With a new President & CEO at the helm, WRI is about to develop its next five-year strategy. We recognize the opportunity this offers for strategic alignment and direction across our global network, becoming a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable organization, to invest in our staff, support systems and innovation, and to enhance the productivity of our teams by unlocking and expediting decision-making processes and breaking down silos. Success will demand strong, effective leadership and management. WRI has an extraordinary opportunity to assemble a senior team of proven leaders to guide the development of our next strategy and equip us tackle the challenges ahead in four distinct clusters. Four roles have been created meet our growing organization’s needs.

One of these roles is the Managing Director and Executive Vice President for Strategy and Results who will be accountable for WRI’s overall strategy, the expansion of WRI’s strategic partnerships and ensuring that WRI’s actions are aligned with its strategy through best-in-class results measurement system. You will be responsible for strengthening our global partnerships, evaluating and measuring results and impact across our portfolio of programs globally, and oversee multiple strategies in a highly collaborative environment.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring WRI’s strategy is built on its DNA and is fit for purpose for the next decade and its actions are aligned with its strategy.
  • Ensuring our political, social, and corporate partnerships and jointly managed platforms are optimally aligned, integrated and add the greatest strategic value to deliver our strategies.
  • Supporting major fundraising and development efforts, bringing insights and network of contacts to strengthen WRI’s donor relationships.
  • Ensuring WRI develops and implements best in class results management system.
  • Ensuring WRI sets clear goals, measurements and monitors our desired results, evidence-based outcomes and to maximize our strategic relationships.
  • Ensuring alignment of strategies of the multiple internal constituents – programs, centers, offices, and other internal functions – are robust, aligned with theories of change, that are informed by evidence-based research and learning.
  • Being accountable for the organization’s outcomes harvesting process including meeting established internal and external standards for best practices in strategic and annual planning, learning, and monitoring and evaluating WRI’s results.

Person specifications

This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, experienced, persuasive communicator who can articulate WRI’s vision and direction effectively through public speaking, writing, networking, fundraising, and one-on-one discussions and is passionate about outcomes to address urgent global challenges.

The successful candidate naturally connects, builds, and maintains strong and trusting relationships with others; demonstrates a high level of personal integrity and emotional intelligence, and the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively; and is capable of convening important constituencies and able to leverage these relationships to accomplish goals of WRI.

This leader creates and articulates an inspiring strategy for the organization along with the President & CEO and translates it into clear, achievable objectives to the external partners, and funders; fostering big ideas while being committed to change on the ground.

You have a deep understanding of technical, policy and equity issues related to the environment and economic development, with a track record of quality, credible, ethical, and respected work around these issues in various continents of the world and with different governmental, private-sector, NGO, and civil society constituencies.

Our Managing Director and Executive Vice President for Strategy and Results has excellent judgment; is comfortable and determined in setting priorities and overseeing multiple strategies in a highly collaborative environment; and makes confident decisions that fairly balance a variety of factors and to navigate confidently in ambiguous or challenging situations.
