The University of Manchester are looking to appoint a Chair in Management to join the School of Engineering. The role is an exciting opportunity for an internationally recognised academic to advance the field of Management research in our School of Engineering. The appointee will provide academic vision, engender a collegiate working environment and lead initiatives to shape the research agenda and ensure that the School of Engineering is placed at the forefront of interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-sector partnerships to tackle some of the biggest questions facing society at large. We particularly welcome applications from those with a research and education interest around the management of engineering and relating to at least one of the following areas:

  • project studies and leadership 
  • risk & regulatory research 
  • complex infrastructure and transformation projects 
  • management of the digital environment

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop a research portfolio that is applicable to a range of engineering disciplines, advances management practice in multiple sectors and is aligned with long term national and international priorities to enable leading practice in project management. They will be expected to develop their own research programmes and to collaborate with other researchers across the School of Engineering and further afield in the University, enhancing reach and significance of their research. All staff are expected to contribute to teaching.

The ideal candidate for this role will hold a leading reputation in engineering management research, and take a collaborative approach to generating research projects, world leading publications, societal impact and to supporting skills development in management research within the School of Engineering. The candidate will have evidence of providing an exemplary student experience through research inspired teaching, the design of innovative and engaging learning materials and supportive supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. We are particularly seeking applicants from diverse backgrounds and career paths.

Successful applicants will be expected to provide internationally recognised research leadership in an area of Engineering Management and, through collaboration with colleagues across the School of Engineering, develop high-impact research programmes. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to research-inspired teaching and training with opportunities to do so via input to the internationally renowned portfolio of Management of Projects MSc programmes, across the Management threads of multiple professionally accredited undergraduate engineering programmes and through further development of training programmes for PhD cohorts. Appointments at professorial level are expected to contribute to leadership within the research community and the organisation, engendering a supportive culture for earlier career staff and contributing to the development of a world-leading Engineering Management research portfolio within our School of Engineering.

Salary and terms of employment

This is a permanent position based in Manchester. The salary on offer is commensurate with the Professorial role.

The successful applicant(s) will be located within one of the Departments in the School of Engineering; the precise location and Department will be decided via discussion with the successful candidate and the Head of School, Professor Alice Larkin and the Dean, Professor Martin Schröder.
