Imperial College London and the Medical Research Council (MRC) are inviting applications for the role of Institute Director for the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS).

Linking discovery science and medicine to drive innovation and health - the LMS is an internationally renowned biomedical research institute where scientists and clinicians collaborate to advance the understanding of biology and its application to medicine. The LMS is hosted by Imperial College at the Hammersmith Hospital campus in West London. Its proximity to the growing life sciences hub in White City, West London provides unique collaboration opportunities with Imperial College and with industry.

Founded by the Medical Research Council over 20 years ago, the LMS attracts outstanding scientists, postdoctoral fellows and students from around the world. The Director will have control of the core budget of some £85 million over five years (with latitude to make the case for up to 10% further funding to support the Director’s vision) and direction of around 220 research and support staff supported within a new cutting-edge research facility on the rapidly growing Hammersmith Hospital campus of Imperial College.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding scientist and dynamic, visionary leader to succeed Professor Dame Amanda Fisher. The ideal candidate will be a biomedical scientist, with an international reputation and an excellent track record in an area of human biology and pathobiology/pathophysiology and clinical translation relevant to the Institute’s mission. They will need to show a compelling vision and strategic approach to drive a new clinical science agenda for the LMS and complementary ambitions for interdisciplinary research and translation. This is an excellent opportunity to lead an exceptional MRC institute, and work alongside world-leading scientists to deliver ground-breaking research. The new Director will be expected to lead their own substantial programme of research.

This is a senior appointment, open to clinical and non-clinical researchers with a competitive salary that is negotiable depending on experience. The successful applicant may be employed by either the MRC or Imperial College, subject to discussion, with relevant terms and conditions. MRC and Imperial College strongly encourage applications from those with a diverse range of backgrounds.
