York Museums Trust (YMT) was formed in 2002 as an independent charitable trust to manage the city’s museums and gallery service, previously run by City of York Council. YMT is responsible for four sites; York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and Gardens and York St Mary’s. Rooted in York and Yorkshire, YMT looks outwards nationally and globally, sharing its collections, gardens, buildings, art and stories for learning, enjoyment and wellbeing, to benefit all. Our aim is to work together with audiences and communities to inspire, to share and to care for cultural heritage. Significant restructuring of the organisation and refinement of the Trust’s operating model were stimulated by the pandemic which also saw very strong support from major funders, donors and the communities served by YMT

The Board of Trustees is now seeking a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a creative and inspirational leader to build on our strong platform and help us achieve our vision, mission and strategic objectives. This will require effective management, strategic leadership and sustaining an appropriate organisational culture. The CEO is responsible for the reputation of YMT and is its lead advocate and will have a high profile within the city, throughout the region and across the sector.

The next CEO will have significant leadership and management experience, be able to develop and deliver a coherent strategic vision, as well as inspire and motivate a committed team across all sites. They must have an appreciation of the City and its surrounding communities along with the wider regional context and the important role played by visitors and tourists. Candidates must be comfortable working in a complex environment and be able to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a track record in leading capital development projects, have an appreciation of working with the Trust’s various national collections and a commitment to innovative programming. We expect the next CEO to be passionate about our vision and mission and align with our values. They must be strongly committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and effective outreach and have experience of driving change in this area.
