Thank you for your interest in the role of external governor at the University of Portsmouth.

The University is proud to be bold, not old. We have embraced change to create a new breed of university, where collaboration and partnership underpin the way in which we work. We want to be judged on our achievements and by what we do to help others achieve.

The University of Portsmouth is a place where both staff and students achieve great things, showing ambition and commitment towards growing our reputation through inspirational education and excellent research and innovation.

We have grown our global profile, strengthened and broadened our research and innovation, enhanced our students’ experience – particularly in preparing them for the world of work, and developed our role within the city and the region.

Portsmouth is a bustling and diverse city with a strong maritime tradition and an equally strong sense of place and community.

Our aim is to be the top modern university in the UK and one of the top 100 young universities in the world by 2030. We are well placed to achieve these goals: in 2017, we were awarded TEF Gold, the highest rating for teaching quality. In 2019, we were awarded £5.8 million by Research England to develop our plastics research – the largest single research award in the University’s history. The results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 place us third of all modern post-92 UK universities for research power, and we continue to be a desirable destination for students.

Our mission is to create, share and apply knowledge to make a difference to individuals and society. Our values underpin everything we do: we are Ambitious, Responsible, and Open.

This is a time of significant change for higher education and we are seeking new governors to join our board at this exciting time. The Board of Governors is responsible for setting the educational character, mission and strategic vision of the University. Governors work with the Vice Chancellor and Executive to ensure the University’s success in a rapidly changing and competitive higher education environment.

We are particularly interested in recruiting new governors with experience in the fields of audit, finance and accountancy.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. We would particularly welcome applications from a range of ethnicities and those with protected characteristics.
