The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) was established in 2005 as a joint activity of the University of Groningen and the Academic Hospital Groningen (AZG). With more than 10,000 employees the UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands and is the only university medical center in the North of the Netherlands, providing top-level clinical and basic care to more than 3 million people living in the region. Research and education at the UMCG are funded through the University of Groningen, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences functions as an integral part of the University. The UMCG is demonstrably among the best scientific-educational institutes in the Netherlands in the area of medicine, dentistry and human movement sciences. Its world-leading research is characterized by a combination of fundamental and patient-oriented clinical research.
The Department of Epidemiology is a flourishing and internationally recognised department with a strong life course in epidemiology. The Department’s goal is to study patterns, causes and effects of health and disease conditions in both the general population and clinical populations, contributing to the strategic theme of Healthy Aging, a main theme of both the UMCG and the University of Groningen. Maintaining a strong profile as a center of expertise in the methodology of cohort studies, including biobanking and Big Data studies, the Department has both the expertise (methodological and disease-specific) as well as the tools to facilitate and strengthen all epidemiological, clinical and biobanking research performed at the UMCG.
The UMCG now seeks to appoint a new Head for the Department of Epidemiology. The new Head will lead the Department and stimulate collaboration within the Prevention, Public Health, and Primary Care cluster as well as with other (clinical) Departments at UMCG. The successful candidate has an innovative and inspiring vision of the broad developments in epidemiology, both in terms of research and education. An expert in the field of gathering, connecting, and analysing data from large intramural and extramural cohorts, the Head of Department will deliver top-quality research that contributes to innovation and impact. The new Head will also stimulate collaboration with other (clinical) departments and partners within the region.
