Glyndebourne is recognised internationally as one of the great opera houses; a reputation that stems from a passion for artistic excellence encapsulated in founder John Christie’s insistence on doing “not the best we can do but the best that can be done anywhere”.
Today, Glyndebourne is a year-round operation. The Festival presents a programme of operas throughout the summer, and the annual Glyndebourne Tour, established to bring opera to new audiences across the country and create opportunities for talented singers, runs from October to December. We run a widely respected education programme that stages new work and delivers projects to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of opera. Glyndebourne now also curates year-round exhibitions of contemporary art and sculpture drawing together art and music, alongside displays of fascinating archival material drawn from the collection. Many more people experience Glyndebourne’s work through our newly created streaming service Encore, yearly programme of cinema screenings, and pioneering specialist recordings to share our work with a global audience through these channels. We have a thriving membership scheme which includes special ticketing arrangements for both under-30s and under-40s.
Glyndebourne has come through the pandemic with flying colours. We never closed our doors and our reputation for independence and self-reliance has been enhanced. We are now seeking to appoint a new Director of Audience Development following the appointment of our current postholder, Richard Davidson-Houston, to Managing Director in Autumn. The Director of Audience Development is responsible for engaging new and existing audiences for everything Glyndebourne does and for creating content and experiences which not only serve this purpose but also generate revenue in support of our charitable objectives. They will define and implement strategies which build new audiences for all areas of our work and retain and engage existing audiences. They will lead a multi-skilled team to maximise profitable revenue opportunities in retail, art, content / media distribution and exploitation of Glyndebourne’s Intellectual Property (IP) as well as strengthen and develop the Glyndebourne brand. Candidates should have a passion for the work and mission of Glyndebourne and align to our values.
