In terms of its exceptional research, 17 HKUMed academics were named as “Highly Cited Researchers” by Clarivate Analytics in 2021, a record high for the Faculty.

 

DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE AND PRIMARY CARE, SCHOOL OF CLINICAL MEDICINE

The Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care (FMPC) currently has 7 professoriate staff, 2 postdoctoral fellows, 7 administrative staff and 28 research staff, as well 1 additional professoriate staff under recruitment.

FMPC conducts teaching in all six years of the MBBS curriculum, organised in four major programmes: Professionalism in Practice, Clinical Interpersonal Skills, Family Medicine Junior Clerkship and Family Medicine & Community Care Specialty Clerkship.

  • There are around 20 on-going research projects in three themes: Health & Health Services, Health-related quality of life & mental health, and Medical Education.
  • There are a number of strategic development initiatives, including:
    • Big clinical data research in collaboration with Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Department of Medicine, School of Public Health and School of Nursing;
    • Medical Education innovations and scholarship in collaboration with Bau Institute of Medical & Health Sciences Research;
    • Professional leadership in family medicine and primary mental health care through local and international initiatives.
    • The Department has an Endowed Professorship in Family Medicine and an Endowed Primary Care Research Fund that provide regular support for academic activities.

THE CANDIDATE

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Head of Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care:

  • Organise, conduct and lead scholarly research with international standards and impact, including collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and driving research performance of the Department
  • Teach, develop and oversee undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in the area of Family Medicine to provide education and training appropriate to HKU’s status as a global top-tier medical school 
  • Plan and lead the provision of dedicated clinical service and patient care following current best practices for the community at the University and affiliated clinics
  • Provide leadership and administrative service at the Department, Faculty and University levels to devise, implement and improve procedures and policies to achieve institutional missions
  • Play an advisory role in formulation and realisation of measures for provision of primary care in Hong Kong, according to specific expertise and experience

 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS 

HKUMed is looking for international quality leaders. As such, successful candidates will need to demonstrate: 

  • A medical qualification registrable with the Medical Council of Hong Kong, and a higher professional qualification, i.e. Specialty Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians or equivalent 
  • A strong interest in research and preferably with a postgraduate research degree 
  • Evidence of international recognition of clinical excellence; proven achievements in research; a strong commitment to, and excellence in, teaching medical students and training residents; and the ability to contribute to undergraduate curriculum development 
  • Direct communication with patients is required and the languages employed are English and Cantonese, knowledge of Putonghua is highly desirable 
  • The appointee will teach, organize and develop undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; conduct high-quality scholarly research; provide clinical service and patient care; and contribute to administrative duties in the Unit, Faculty and the University 
  • They will perform the duties at the University’s teaching hospitals in Hong Kong
