The University of Sydney is Australia’s first University and one of the world’s leading comprehensive research and teaching universities – ranked 41st in the world overall (QS 2023) and among the best for impact (global 52nd, THE 2022).
Since our inception over 170 years ago, the University has been a leader in improving the world around us, and this drive for innovation and impact continues to be a hallmark of the University’s vision for the future. An exciting new chapter is also beginning for our institution as we enter a new strategic cycle (to 2032) and following leadership renewal and consolidation in the last year, with the appointments of Professor Mark Scott AO as Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and of a new Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and a Vice-Principal (External Relations).
With an opportunity to build upon an exceptional platform, the next Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) (PVCR) will provide oversight of University research systems, research grants and metrics, and research integrity and ethics as well as related areas such as Clinical Trials, helping advance the University’s academic outcomes and standing as a world-leading research-intensive global university. Reporting to the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Emma Johnston, the appointee will work with the portfolio team as an effective manager, work collaboratively in support of the Executive as a trusted advisor, work with funding agencies and other external bodies as a stakeholder, and most importantly work with the University’s researchers to help make their outstanding endeavours in inquiry, discovery and translation easier.
The University of Sydney is seeking an accomplished researcher who possesses a deep understanding of research administration and policy, demonstrable experience with large grants and the leadership capacity to advance the University’s research excellence in a highly competitive global landscape. The ideal candidate will have research and management prowess, deftness in stakeholder engagement, and an operational mentality that seeks to improve systems and processes. Added to this will be the personal attributes of high integrity, academic rigour, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. The next PVCR will be values-driven and inspired by the University’s commitment to positive impact on and “leadership for good” in the communities we serve.
