THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

Founded in 1911, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in teaching and research, and has been at the international forefront of academic scholarship for many years. The University has a comprehensive range of study programmes and research disciplines spreading across 10 faculties and over 140 academic departments and institutes/centres. There are around 30,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students who are recruited globally, and more than 4,000 members of academic and academic-related staff coming from multicultural backgrounds, many of whom are internationally renowned.

ABOUT LKS FACULTY OF MEDICINE

HKUMed is Hong Kong’s oldest and most prestigious faculty of medicine and a leader in pioneering medical education, training and research. It has continually set the benchmark for excellence in Asia, and ranked in 20th place worldwide for clinical and health subjects in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Ranking. In terms of its exceptional research, 17 HKUMed academics were named as “Highly Cited Researchers” by Clarivate Analytics in 2021, a record high for the Faculty.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY AND PHARMACY

2019 marked the 10th anniversary of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy at The University of Hong Kong and the formation of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree programme, dedicated to the training of competent pharmacists to service the needs of the community.

In the past decade, the Department has developed its pharmacy programme (BPharm, MMedScs and Master of Advanced Pharmacy programme) like no other — a combination of solid knowledge-based teaching, problem-based learning, simulated online learning and last but not least, interprofessional learning with other health care disciplines. Through small class sizes teaching, our students are able to closely interact with our experienced teachers and other students to acquire the communication skills needed in their lifelong journey.

RESEARCH THEMES AND FOCUSES

Together with the Nanjing University, the Department is co-hosting the State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Based on our professorial staff’s track records and self-evaluation of strengths, four Research Clusters have been identified: (i) Cardiovascular Research; (ii) Ageing and Related Diseases; (iii) Drug Delivery and Translational Research; and (iv) Big Data for Medication Safety and Pharmacoeconomics. Members in all the clusters are well funded by competitive grants (AoE, CRF, GRF, HMRF, NSFC 973), State Key Laboratories, contract research supports and international funding agencies.
