The lives of children and young people worldwide are inextricably linked to the amount and quality of education they receive. At the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) our mission is to improve outcomes for future generations everywhere and to support positive change across education systems. We do this by creating and sharing robust research evidence and insights on education policy and practice, informing policymakers and other key decision makers on the issues that matter in education and strengthening practice in the classroom.

As the UK’s leading independent provider of education research and analysis, we are a not-for-profit organisation, with an income of £19 million pa and 240 staff. Our expertise, long history, vast experience and pioneering methods have established our reputation as an authoritative, trusted and respected voice in education.

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and committed Trustees to support our purpose of providing robust evidence to improve education. This is an exciting opportunity to help develop and grow NFER and increase our impact on outcomes for children and young people. The new Trustees will work with the Chair of the Board, Lorna Cocking, other Trustees, the Chief Executive, Carole Willis and the staff of NFER, all of whom have a wide range of expertise and experience.

Applicants should have a strong interest in the contribution that research and assessment can make in improving the effectiveness of education. The key qualities we are looking for are: the ability to operate at a strategic level, offer key insights into the business, provide constructive challenge to help grow the business and help us think in creative and innovative ways.

Recent experience and expertise are sought from Senior Managers/Directors in the areas of commerce and finance.

Trustees are responsible for agreeing the aims and direction of the Foundation and for ensuring it delivers the charitable outcomes for which it has been established. You would be expected to attend Board meetings four times a year and a strategy day (usually in May) and contribute to a Board Committee or working group. There is no fee but travel and other expenses are reimbursed.
