Murray Edwards College was founded in 1954 as a college for women students at the University of Cambridge. Comprising 63 Fellows, around 550 undergraduate postgraduate students, and a dedicated team of 120 professional staff, Murray Edwards is a college for women with ambition, committed to furthering academic excellence and gender equality. We are an open and inclusive community where we champion women’s status in society and the workplace as well as sharing women’s views on major societal issues. The pursuit of intellectual excellence is coupled with a broad range of activities that develop the whole individual. We are also proud to be the home of the Women’s Art Collection, the largest collection of art by women in Europe.

Philanthropy plays an important role in the life of the College: the donation of the Darwin family’s home enabled the creation of the College on Huntingdon Road; alumna Ros Edwards and her husband Steve Edwards’ £30 million gift in 2005 created an endowment; and recently the John Browne Charitable Trust made a £2 million gift to support the creation of the Paula Browne House to enhance student accommodation, teaching and conference capacity.

Murray Edwards now seeks to appoint a new Director of Development to lead engagement with a wide range of alumnae and other supporters. The Director is a Fellow of the College, and a Member of the College’s Governing Body. Working closely with College President Dorothy Byrne, the Director will manage all aspects of fundraising and alumni relations; including relationships with high-level donors, stewardship, events and communications. The Director sits on several key College committees and is one of the senior officers of the College.

The new Director of Development will be responsible for creating and implementing a new phase of the College’s fundraising strategy and leading a small team. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in fundraising leadership and will have significant experience in securing major philanthropic gifts. They will be an excellent communicator who is committed to the College’s goals and ethos, and able to articulate its vision in a compelling manner. They are likely to have held senior fundraising roles in the higher education, cultural or not-for-profit sector, and will be comfortable at working across the collegiate structure of the University of Cambridge.

Applications will close at midnight BST on Monday 26th September 2022.

Salary, pension and benefits:

The salary is £90,000.

The position is eligible for USS membership.

The post holder is entitled to 5 weeks of annual leave plus bank holidays. It is preferable that leave is not taken during the academic term.
