Manchester is a city with a rich sporting heritage, being the home to some of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world, several national governing bodies of sport, national training squads, the birthplace of some of the UK’s most decorated athletes and the host city of premier sporting events such as the Cricket World Cup, UEFA Women’s Euro, World Taekwondo Grand Prix, the upcoming Rugby League World Cup and Para Swimming World Championships.

Known as a global sporting hub, and one of the best top ten cities in the world globally for sport, the city-region boasts a sporting infrastructure second to none and a commitment to world-class event delivery. The hugely successful legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth Games has provided the city with an extensive range of sporting facilities which has been enhanced in recent years following significant capital investment, making Manchester the UK’s sporting capital.

Whilst sport and physical activity form an integral part of Manchester’s identity, the reality is that health inequalities and hurdles to participation persist, just as they do throughout the country. MCRactive, therefore, plays an important role in the city, working with our partners to remove barriers, widen access, and to help ensure everyone in Manchester lead healthier lifestyles through sport and physical activity.

Our 10-year sport and physical activity strategy is the result of an extensive public consultation exercise undertaken by the city in which we engaged with thousands of residents, partners, and multiple stakeholders to produce seven interrelated themes around what sport and physical activity could look like for them and our city in the future.

We are now looking for a new CEO to join us at a pivotal stage in our development, who will advocate for the health interests of Mancunians from all walks of life who will be responsible for delivering an ambitious agenda. In collaboration with our board and management team, they will lead our response to emerging challenges and be at the forefront of innovative methods to drive participation in sports and physical activity across our city, working closely with our diverse range of partners, which include organisations such as the Manchester City Council, Sport England, UK Sport, National Governing Bodies, Manchester's Place Based Care Partnership and the Manchester Local Care Organisation. They will oversee an ambitious commercial strategy which includes £150million of capital investment over the course of the next five years to create better places for more residents to be active. In the process, they will tackle health inequalities and establish a framework for healthier living that the rest of the country can look to for inspiration.

Adept at operating within complex, multi-stakeholder environments, they will be able to draw on their understanding of community engagement, local government, and the funding landscape - as well as their track record of collaboration and creating/nourishing key relationships - to ensure we are operating at our most effective. Good judgement and a collaborative approach will be fundamental, as will strong financial and commercial acumen. The successful candidate will be an unquestionably inclusive leader with exceptional integrity, they will share our passion for and commitment to the use of physical activity as a lever for social change.
