Voted University of the Year in this year’s Whatuni Student Choice Awards, University College Birmingham (UCB) is an ambitious and growing institution recognised for its commitments to educational excellence, student success, and industry relevance. Acknowledged as a leading institution for increasing social mobility, this year UCB established a partnership with the University of Warwick set to further enhance its positive impact for students, the economy, and society.

University College Birmingham has developed beyond recognition since the founding of its forebear, the Birmingham Municipal Technical School in the nineteenth century. Having grown substantially in both space and scope, UCB remains true to its core mission of providing access to high quality learning opportunities to an ever more diverse range of students. Now home to over 7,500 students and 600 staff across five campuses, the University offers a range of higher and further education vocational courses across business, tourism, creative industries, health, sport, and food, with growing strengths across allied health, STEM, and construction. UCB also boasts world-class facilities following a £140 million investment into new campuses, equipment, and resources, all developed with real industry in mind.

A wide range of UCB’s undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, together with some higher-level apprenticeships, are now accredited by the University of Warwick; part of a partnership designed to benefit our students and their professional ambitions, as well as the wider regional economy of the West Midlands.

We are now seeking to appoint a new Director of Human Resources to lead this crucial function and support the development of a new transformational people strategy as part of the University’s Strategic Plan. Reporting to the University Secretary and Registrar and a member of the Senior Management Team working closely with the Executive Leadership Team, the Director will be a key strategic leader in the University, who will help effect cultural and organisational change. They will be responsible for all matters relating to Human Resources, which includes people, operations, organisational development, learning and development, digital HR, recruitment and retention, equality, diversity, and inclusion.

You will be an inspiring and dynamic leader, with a genuine understanding of the role that a modern and progressive human resources function can play. You will possess a track record of successful strategic leadership of human resources, including substantial employee relations experience, and of transformational change within an organisation of significant complexity, where people are at the heart of organisational success. In addition, you will have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with experience of developing high performing teams and establishing credibility with senior colleagues and external stakeholders. We are seeking an individual who will also share a deep commitment to our values and mission.

The University would welcome applications from candidates with the qualifications and experience to undertake this role. We are committed to being a fully inclusive and diverse community. We seek and encourage applications for this role from the broadest range of society, including all under-represented groups.

Application is by submission of a full curriculum vitae and a covering letter of application, addressing the job description and person specification and including suitable daytime and evening telephone contact details.

Completed applications should be uploaded at quoting reference 6144. The closing date for applications is midnight (GMT) on Monday 28th November 2022.
