As one of the world’s oldest and most successful universities, the University of Cambridge is a renowned centre for research, education, and scholarship whose ideas and innovations have shaped the world for over eight centuries. We are one of the world’s foremost universities in an increasingly competitive global higher education sector and continue our work to maintain this position.

Central to achieving this will be our ability to make a positive impact through outstanding sustainable performance. We are building a culture where our community is empowered and supported to improve their personal and collective environmental sustainability practices, and as a result, we are ranked as the UK’s top University for sustainable research, and fifth in the UK in the overall rankings. However, we must go further, and we are now seeking a new Head of Sustainability to drive our plans forward.

Reporting to the Head of the Estates Division, the Head of Sustainability will lead the University’s long-term strategic level sustainability planning and the implementation of a range of programmes, projects, policies and initiatives to support the delivery of our ambitious carbon reduction and sustainability commitments. This will include the integration of sustainable practice into our procurement policies and processes, as well as leading the development of sustainability action plans at institution level.

You will become the University’s subject matter expert on sustainability and act as a trusted adviser to senior management, University Committees and the wider Collegiate University to realise and capitalise on potential opportunities, including , but not limited to, carbon reduction, energy efficiency, waste management, travel and transport, biodiversity, sustainable procurement, and sustainable construction.

The successful candidate will be a strategic leader and will bring experience of leading and advising on sustainability initiatives in large and complex organisations. You will have demonstrable experience of providing advice and securing senior level commitment and support for the integration of sustainability into organisational policy and processes.  Critical to your success in the role will be your ability to effect change in a highly devolved context, building consensus through influence and persuasion to win the hearts and minds of people at all levels.
