Welcome to the Woodland Trust and thank you for contemplating joining us. We are the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity, working towards our vision of a world where woods and trees thrive for people and nature.

This is an ambitious and exciting time for the Trust as we celebrate our 50th birthday and look ahead to our journey to 2030. Our strategy sets out our goals to:

  • Make it as socially unacceptable to destroy an ancient wood or tree as it is to destroy a masterpiece or building of a similar age.
  • Have kickstarted nature’s recovery by improving the ecological condition of native woodlands.
  • Have significantly scaled up our woodland creation work to support the UK’s efforts to meet net zero carbon emissions and support nature’s recovery.

The Strategy is based on three key foundation stones: protect, restore, and create native woodland in the UK.


  • We protect ancient, veteran and valuable woods and trees, to stop the loss of irreplaceable habitat and carbon stores and preserve our natural heritage.


  • We restore the ecological condition of existing native woods and trees, increasing landscape resilience and creating conditions for nature and people to thrive.


  • We create quality native woods and get native trees growing to benefit nature, climate and people.

Our role in tackling the nature and climate crises has never been more relevant. The Trust is enjoying a period of great success, financially, reputationally and in terms of serving our mission but there is still more to do.

We are seeking two trustees to join our Board who will bring skills in ecology/conservation, carbon markets, or digital communications (particularly social media), who can help the Trust shape its strategic future in the digital world. To ensure we broaden our reach and impact we need diversity of thought and ideas, so we hope to hear from a broad range of backgrounds and at different career stages.

At the Woodland Trust, we want to reflect and represent the full richness of diversity in the UK. Fewer of our employees are Black, Asian or minority ethnic, disabled, from lower socio-economic backgrounds or under 25. So, we are particularly keen to receive your application if you are from one or more of these groups.

In addition to being on the Board and on a committee, trustees are expected to fulfil some wider roles, such as ambassador for the Trust, using their own networks for advocacy and fundraising, championing different areas of the Trust.

Trustees should be willing to commit at least 12 days a year to the Trust. This comprises of Board meetings which are face to face in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and last up to a day and currently take place on a quarterly basis. Additionally, there is an annual two-day site visit, committee meetings and other events to attend. Trustees are appointed for four years which can be extended by a further four-year term following a review and mutual agreement.

There is also a review meeting with the Chair annually.
