About The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. In the CUHK Strategic Plan 2021-25, “China: Tradition and Modernity” is identified as one of the four research focus areas for the University.
About the Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts at CUHK is the largest faculty dedicated to humanities research and education in Hong Kong, with over 400 professors, researchers, and lecturers. There are 11 departments covering academic disciplines from Anthropology to Translation, a Center for China Studies, 2 language teaching units, and over 30 research centers. The Faculty offers 16 major programmes at the undergraduate level and over 30 taught and research postgraduate programmes, of which 15 are for a doctoral degree.
About the Department of History
Home to generations of leading scholars of Chinese History, the Department of History is arguably the most important research institute for Chinese history outside of Mainland China and a renowned centre for World History education in Southeast Asia. It has over a dozen academic staff whose research and teaching actively engage many topics in Hong Kong, Chinese, Asian, American, European, and World History. The Department offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In the Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the University Grants Council of the Hong Kong government in 2020, 97% of the Department’s research output was ranked as “of international and global impact”, the highest in the Faculty as well as CUHK. Two more recent areas for research and teaching in the Department are comparative history and public history.
The Department of History seeks to appoint an accomplished and innovative scholar in the field of modern Chinese history, with a focus on the twentieth-century. The successful candidate should be committed to teaching courses at all levels and ready to supervise postgraduate students; they are expected to play a leading role in further developing the study of modern and contemporary China in the Department and across CUHK.
