The University of Birmingham’s heritage as Britain’s first civic university is combined with an ambitious agenda to continue the transformation of the University. Following the successful tenure of Professor David Adams, we now seek to appoint a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Medical and Dental Sciences. The College’s record of pioneering and translational health research has been recognised by a very strong performance in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, as well as by its recent success in securing a threefold funding increase for the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (to £30 million). The College is shaping the future of health and medicine through the provision of innovative education. Its longstanding collaborations with the NHS, including through Birmingham Health Partners, alongside access to a large and highly diverse local population ensures its research and education make a real-world difference.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS) is responsible for providing academic leadership across a vibrant community of 1,800 academic and professional services staff, and over 5,000 students. The College enjoys world-class research strengths in areas as varied as clinical trials, cancer, liver disease, rheumatology, maternal health, and public health. Comprising eight institutes and six schools - including one of the largest medical schools in the UK, alongside Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing & Midwifery and a Graduate School. The College is a key partner in the creation of the Birmingham Health Innovation campus, due to open in 2023. This collaboration will harness world-leading academic and clinical strengths with new commercial power accelerating life sciences research, healthcare and technologies.
As a member of the University Executive Board, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor is a key member of the collective senior leadership of the organisation, working alongside senior leaders from across the institution to implement our Birmingham 2030 strategic framework. The success of MDS in particular will be crucial to supporting the University’s ambition to be a top 50 global institution, building on the College’s recent successes to achieve further significant improvements in research quality and income, as well as building a diverse and innovative education portfolio. This is a role for an inspirational leader who can lead, shape, and realise the growth agenda of the College.
