Macquarie University has demonstrated considerable commitment to Indigenous higher education. In 2016, the University launched a 10-year Indigenous Strategy that would lead a whole of university approach to increased outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student and staff success, Indigenous education and research. Since this time Macquarie University has experienced growth in all of these strategic focus areas and has much to celebrate.

Walanga Muru (‘follow your path’ in the language of the local Dharug People) is integral to the success of the Macquarie University Indigenous Strategy and provides a community of engagement and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students.  Walanga Muru also partners with high schools and broader community to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people receive the preparation they need to succeed in higher education, and work to provide a culturally safe and inclusive university environment.

An exciting opportunity now exists to join us as the Director of Walanga Muru. Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy), the Director will provide visionary and cohesive leadership and operational management of the Centre to advance the University’s commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students. Applicants will have a strong understanding of the higher education sector along with a record of demonstrated impact in their profession. They will be an inspiring and experienced leader, with the ability to develop cohesive strategies and effective transactional outcomes in a complex environment. 

The successful applicant will be an effective collaborator with key internal and external stakeholders, and able to negotiate, influence and execute programs and initiatives for the mutual benefit of the Indigenous community and the University. Most importantly, they will be able to build on our foundations of respect, knowledge, community and cultural values, to ensure a culturally affirming space that defines a strong and proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
