The Martingale Foundation has been created because we believe that family income should not be a barrier to the pursuit of academic excellence. Our mission is to find, fund and support a new generation of STEM postgraduates.

We recruit students that have the potential to excel at PhD level. We offer them scholarships that include full funding for a master’s and a PhD at one of our five partner universities: Cambridge, Imperial, King’s, Oxford and UCL. We then support them through an on-going development programme, including access to research and industry internships.

Having launched in September 2022, we have now made offers to 25 Martingale scholars in mathematics, who will commence their studies in September 2023. Over the next 10 years, we plan to expand to a wider network of universities and other STEM subjects. We are now recruiting our first Chief Executive to develop and scale the organisation in the years ahead.

Building on the excellent foundations already in place, the Chief Executive will have four main priorities: (i) Build an outstanding team; (ii) Refine the scholarship programme, (iii) Create a strategy for growth, and (iv) Develop new partnerships with funders and universities.

The Martingale Foundation is being incubated by Ark Ventures, one of the UK’s leading non-profit venture builders. Ark Ventures has a track record of launching, developing and growing charities that address some of the most intractable challenges in education. The foundation is supported with multi-year funding and support from XTX Markets.
