Appointment of Director, The University of Sydney Nano Institute

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first University and one of the world’s leading comprehensive research and teaching universities – ranked 41st in the world overall (QS 2023) and among the best for impact (global 52nd, THE 2022).

Since our inception over 170 years ago, the University has been a leader in improving the world around us, and this drive for innovation and impact continues to be a hallmark of the University’s vision for the future. An exciting new chapter is also beginning for our institution with the release of our 2032 Strategy, focused on delivering sustained and consistent excellence and developing the flexibility and resilience to keep pace with – or ahead of – the changes we will inevitably experience in an increasingly fluid and unpredictable world.

The University of Sydney Nano Institute is at the forefront of these aspirations. Our mission is to transform our economy, society and everyday life through multidisciplinary research in nanoscale science and technology. Revolutionary changes in science and technology have opened access to the nanoscale and together we are tackling some of the most challenging problems faced by humanity. With combined expertise from across the University’s disciplines and access to purpose-built facilities, we foster and enable research and education across all faculties, in a way that would not be possible through traditional university structures. Our research is impacting a variety of areas including manufacturing, energy and the environment; health and medicine; and communications, computing and security.

With an opportunity to build upon this exceptional platform, the next Director will guide the Institute to new heights of scientific achievement. They will work collaboratively in support of the Executive as a trusted advisor and will be able to demonstrate the credibility to lead outstanding researchers and an organisation whose mission is pioneering scientific discovery and impact.

The ideal candidate will be a leader in the field who brings a strong personal track record of research excellence, deftness in stakeholder engagement, and the ability to engage with colleagues across disciplines to realise opportunities for research engagement and collaboration. They will bring experience in realising high levels of achievements in complex institutional settings and a commitment to develop and deliver bold and impactful agendas. Added to this will be the personal attributes of high integrity, academic rigour, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. The next Director will be values-driven and inspired by the University’s commitment to positive impact on and “leadership for good” in the communities we serve.

The University of Sydney will be supported in its global search for this appointment by the executive search firm Perrett Laver. Please contact Perrett Laver if you wish to discuss this role further in confidence.
