The University of Exeter with generous funding from Anglo American is establishing The Mark Cutifani Chair in The Future of Mining to be based in the Camborne School of Mines (CSM), part of the Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences (DEES) at their Penryn Campus in Cornwall.
Camborne School of Mines (CSM), is a world-class combined geoscience and mining department. CSM was founded in 1888 to meet the demands of the industry and to train the next generation of prosperous miners. It is the only combined mining engineering and geology department within the UK University system and offers world-class teaching and research with a large and very strong network of alumni and contacts within the extractive industries.
CSM undertake research and education in fundamental and applied aspects of geoscience and georesources – areas of knowledge that are crucial to address many of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, including the energy transition away from fossil fuels and towards more sustainable practices. Key areas of CSM excellence include ore deposits and critical materials, environmental and social governance, automation and new technologies, and minerals processing.

The CSM is seeking a globally recognised leader in the field of contemporary and future mining technology to become The Mark Cutifani Chair in The Future of Mining. The chosen candidate will support research and teaching on the future of responsible mining with a particular emphasis on engineering, environment and sustainability. They will also have the opportunity to establish a research group on future mining and technologies.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a record of success in securing competitive research funding from academic and non-academic sources and publishing in high-quality outputs. They will develop internal and external networks to foster collaboration between Anglo American, CSM, DEES and wider stakeholder communities. They will share CSM's commitment to fostering an inclusive and nurturing culture, promoting equality and diversity.
