We believe in a world where everyone can lead peaceful, fulfilling lives, free from fear and insecurity.

Saferworld is a global charity which has been working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives for over 30 years. Uniting with diverse and expert partner organisations, we make peace possible - through a blend of community-level work and global advocacy.

Since 1989, Saferworld has worked to promote peace and address the drivers of conflict, injustice and insecurity at the local, national, and international level; improving policy and practice to help build lasting peace. We work in over 30 countries with people affected by conflict to improve their safety and sense of security, and work collaboratively with governments, international/regional organisations and civil society to encourage and support effective policies and practice through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others.

We are currently seeking a new Chair and Treasurer to join our dynamic, passionate, and committed board, supporting the good governance of the organisation and offering strategic leadership and critical guidance as we continue to pursue our ambitious Strategy to 2031.
As a Treasurer, you will maintain an overview of Saferworld’s financial affairs and oversee the financial viability of the organisation. As members of the board, you will monitor progress against the organisational strategy, and ensure that Saferworld continues to pursue its mission and objectives while sustaining its stability.

The Chair provides leadership to the Trustees, enabling the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation, as well as providing oversight and scrutiny of Saferworld’s operations. You will also support, and, where appropriate, constructively challenge the Executive Director and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works effectively with the Leadership Team to achieve agreed objectives. The Chair will act as an ambassador and public face of the organisation, working in partnership with the Executive Director to raise the profile of Saferworld and our work.

We are seeking an experienced and accomplished Chair, experienced in the external representation required of the role and with a deep understanding of the complex geopolitical landscape in which Saferworld operates, and of the opportunities and challenges for civil society organisations to help to prevent conflicts and promote human security in this context. This is a significant opportunity for a person who has the strategic focus, governance understanding, leadership experience, passion, and time.

Saferworld is an equal opportunities employer and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and Trustees. We celebrate difference and applications are actively encouraged from individuals from diverse backgrounds, in particular, those who reflect and represent the communities we work in. We are committed to ensuring gender equality within our organisation and we also welcome those who represent the youth we engage with.

To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter, detailing how you fulfil the role description and personal specification to https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/. Please quote reference 6398 for Chair and 6466 for Treasurer. The closing date for applications is 9am GMT on Friday 24th March 2023.

In line with UK Charity Commission regulations, the positions of Chair and Treasurer are voluntary and unremunerated. However, reasonable expenses for quarterly meetings and required travel will be reimbursed. The Board meets at least four times a year in London (with e-participation), with a number of meetings with different Working Groups and Committees.
We encourage Trustees to visit a country programme internationally when possible or required, and you will be invited to attend occasional events as a representative of Saferworld. The initial term of office is for 3 years, with the potential to be reappointed for a further 3 years.
