Sport England and UK Sport are keen to engage a new cohort of potential non-executive directors with the ambition, commitment, and transferable skills to contribute to the sport sector by joining the Board of one of our funded partners. We believe that the right combination of knowledge, experience and diversity in leadership positions will lead to better performance and a stronger sport sector.
Annual audits on the diversity profile of the Boards of national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) and other sports bodies show that there is still a significant lack of diversity. Since 2019, Sport England and UK Sport have been working in partnership with executive search firm, Perrett Laver, and selected partners to identify and develop a talent pool of nearly 300 diverse “Board Ready” candidates. The Programme seeks to enable culture change for wider diversity and greater representation across sports Boards, thereby influencing the sector to realise the power of people and leadership and the value of good governance, producing valuable insight, data and learning to encourage a more reflective, productive, sustainable, and responsible sport sector.
The aim is to engage and secure the interest and commitment of a much wider talent pool, and to network in a new cohort of potential non-executive directors to the sector. Support will be available for those that would welcome this through development and training opportunities. Our funded partners will then be able to advertise upcoming board vacancies to the successful cohort of candidates. Perrett Laver and the consortium of partners will work closely with our funded organisations and potential board candidates to provide networking and deployment support.
During this time, we will continue to work with sports bodies on their diversity action plans and other interventions to ensure an inclusive environment, such that organisations can truly capitalise on the multiple benefits diversity at board level offers.
Through consultation with our funded partners, we have identified a list of commonly sought-after skills, and will be seeking to build a pool of candidates who bring knowledge, insight, and experience in one or more of the following areas:
We welcome applications from people who identify as having any impairment, disability, or long-term health condition; from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds; from all faiths and beliefs; from every part of the country; who identify as any sexuality and/or gender; and regardless of age or marital status. We also seek people with a range of experiences and skills. Experience of working in sport is by no means essential, though passion, enthusiasm, and a desire to make a difference in the industry is.
Given the charitable status of many sports boards, non-executive positions are unlikely to be remunerated but travel expenses may be reimbursed.
