The University of Adelaide is widely recognised for its eminence in research, ranking in the top 90 universities globally (THE 2023, QS 2024). One of the prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive universities, we have over 4000 staff and students in our community of research. We seek to drive innovation and prosperity through the translation of research and new knowledge to enable creative solutions to the greatest challenges of our time.
Located on the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus, which is home to the largest concentration of agrifood research capability and expertise in the southern hemisphere, the Waite Research Institute (WRI) has a longstanding international reputation for delivering innovative research outcomes for Australian and global agriculture, food and wine industries. Our researchers excel on the world stage by bringing together their diverse expertise in plant sciences, viticulture, soils, engineering, food technology, agribusiness and social sciences. The co-location of the Adelaide node of the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF) and key industry partners and other research organisations on the Waite campus including the South Australia Research and Development Institute (SARDI), CSIRO and the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) adds to the critical mass needed to perform transformational research.
Reporting to the Pro-Vice Chancellor Research Excellence (PVCRE) in the Division of Research & Innovation, the next WRI Director will lead and implement the strategic direction and long-term vision for the University to expand its world-class research and research training programs in dryland agriculture, value-added agrifoods, biosecurity, and agribusiness. The appointee will be an inclusive leader able to influence across the University’s Faculties and Schools to create and augment collaborative research opportunities within the WRI’s remit. They will also be an outstanding advocate in agricultural innovation who is able to advance the WRI’s reputation and partnerships both nationally and beyond, particularly through representation on scientific, professional, and industry bodies as well as public engagement.
