The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is a beautifully situated museum founded in 2003 by Hong Kong’s thriving shipping community to showcase Hong Kong’s extraordinary and fascinating maritime history. The Museum’s mission is “to promote a greater knowledge of Hong Kong, China and Asia’s maritime history and the vital role that ships and the sea play in our past, present and future”.

The Role

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) is now inviting applications for the role of Deputy Director. The Deputy Director will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and will oversee both the Curatorial team and the Education team:

Educational

The HKMM is regularly visited by school and community groups and seeks to infuse its narratives, which mainly relate to its physical objects, into school curricula. The HKMM plans to significantly enhance its educational activities in future. It maintains an active Education Committee, which includes senior local figures, to assist its engagement with schools and universities. A particular new area of interest is Marine Conservation, for which the HKMM recently won a grant of about US$2m to build a theatre, classroom and exhibition area to help local NGOs in Marine Conservation show off their work to schools and to the general public. The Education team currently comprises 4 FTEs, including: the Head of Education, an Education Officer, a Marine Science Programme Assistant, and a Marine Science Programme Coordinator.

Curatorial

The HKMM contains over 5,000 objects in its permanent collection, of which approximately 1,200 are currently on display. The HKMM also hosts frequent temporary exhibitions and mini-displays and contains a Research Centre, including a library of maritime publications, both historic and current. The HKMM also maintains an active Collections Committee to enable the engagement of senior experienced local figures with Museum staff. The Curatorial team currently comprises 3 full-time employees (FTEs): an Associate Curator and 2 Assistant Curators. There is also an additional part-time postgrad student as a researcher.

In addition, the Deputy Director role offers a unique opportunity for someone with established strengths in museum leadership to develop or deepen broader organisational and commercial leadership strengths, with the potential to take on a greater leadership role in the future. The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is seeking a creative, enthusiastic and productive senior museum professional with a track record of successful exhibitions over at least 7 years. There is an openness to the specific expertise candidates for this position will bring to the role given the multidisciplinary and encompassing nature of maritime history and experience.
