Appointment of Director of NAISS and Professor in High-Performance Computing

Linköping University (LiU), a distinguished Swedish institution, is celebrated for its innovative research and dedication to technology and sustainability. With over 40,000 students and co-workers, LiU is at the forefront of computational research across various disciplines, including the natural and engineering sciences, life sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The university's commitment to creating a better world is rooted in its fundamental values of credibility, trust, and security, driven by the courage to think freely and innovate.

Central to LiU's infrastructure is the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS), a key national initiative under Linköping University's stewardship. NAISS will host Arrhenius, a groundbreaking supercomputer under the EuroHPC JU programme, set to become operational in 2025. This significant investment, the largest of its kind in Sweden, will dramatically enhance computational capabilities in academia, industry, and the public sector across Europe, placing Sweden at the forefront of the European supercomputing landscape.

LiU also prides itself on hosting Berzelius, currently Sweden's fastest supercomputer dedicated to AI research. The university's collaboration with SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) and MetNo (Norwegian Meteorological Institute) in operating supercomputers for weather forecasts and climate research further highlights its leading role in computational research.

LiU now seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as the Director of NAISS and a full Professor in a field related to High-Performance Computing. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of computational research in Sweden and beyond, with a focus on sustainability and the green transition.

The ideal candidate will have the following professional skills and experience:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A doctoral degree and a strong research background in a field relevant to HPC.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in interdisciplinary, research-focused organizations.
  • Proven track record in strategic planning and organizational change management.
  • Extensive experience in high-performance computing, AI/ML, data analysis, or numerical methods.
  • Recognition in the international HPC community and a history of securing competitive research grants.
  • Documented pedagogical expertise in teaching HPC-related subjects at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Leadership and Management Skills:

  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans for NAISS.
  • Experience in managing HPC facilities or similar infrastructures.
  • Strong capabilities in leading and guiding a diverse team of experts and managers.
  • Insight into the Swedish higher education system and research policy landscape.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent teamwork and relationship-building abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, with a goal- and result-oriented approach.

Language Proficiency:

  • Fluency in English; willingness to learn Swedish is advantageous.
