1. Background

Chance to Shine is an independent children’s charity operating across Great Britain. We change young people’s lives through cricket giving them the opportunity to play, learn and develop through the sport. We keep them physically active, teach them vital skills like teamwork, communication and leadership. And above all, they have fun.

Since 2005 our Chance to Shine Schools programme has helped support over six million young people in state schools and underserved communities. Our work is proven to improve the personal, physical, social and mental well-being of young people.

2.   Purpose of the role

The core purpose of the CEO role is to:

  • Manage, lead and inspire Chance to Shine as a charity to achieve its vision of all young people being able to play, learn and develop through cricket.
  • Ensuring the charity reaches its strategic aims, which currently include:

Strategic Priorities:

  • Providing fun and inclusive opportunities for young people to play and continue playing cricket.
  • Putting impact and youth voice at the heart of our work
  • Working in partnership for young people

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Further improve wellbeing: Over 90% of young people, teachers and parents recognising a positive impact on physical, personal, mental, or social wellbeing through taking part
  • Grow the reach of our impact by meaningfully supporting one million young people per year
  • Prioritising underserved communities: those who have fewer opportunities (young people living in poverty and young people who are inactive). Help to remove barriers and support them to play cricket locally by delivering impact-led cricket programmes.

3. Key Responsibilities

The CEO’s responsibilities include:

Leadership and Management

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Senior Management Team (currently four people)
  • Provide motivational leadership to all employees (and the wider network of Delivery Partners and Coaches)
  • Maintaining and further developing the organisational culture and values and reputation of Chance to Shine
  • Acting at all times as an ambassador and high-level spokesperson

Strategy execution

  • Leading the development of the organisation’s strategy and associated plans
  • Directing execution of strategy on a day-to-day basis (including managing associated budgets)

Financial & Governance

  • Taking responsibility for the financial performance of the charity
  • Ensuring Chance to Shine continues to hold itself (and is compliant) to the highest standards in terms of charity governance and the Code for Sports Governance (as set by Sport England and UK Sport)

Fundraising

  • Actively participating as required in fundraising.
  • Pro-actively supporting the Fundraising department by seeking out and developing new high-level opportunities i.e. with potential major donors and corporate partners

Stakeholder relations

  • Managing and developing key stakeholder relationships (i.e. Sport England, corporate partners)
  • In particular ensuring the best possible relationship for mutual benefit with the England & Wales Cricket Board

4. Key relationships

The job holder will liaise with:

  • Chance to Shine Chair and Board of Trustees
  • Chance to Shine Senior Management Team
  • The England & Wales Cricket Board
  • Sport England
  • Key major donors, corporate partners, trusts & foundations
  • Key delivery partners i.e. County Cricket Board CEOs and Chairs
  • Key ambassadors and media
  • National cricket and other charities i.e. Lord’s Taverners, Street Games

6. Experience & qualifications

The job holder will be an experienced leader with:

  • Demonstrable experience managing and leading successful senior teams in a charitable, sport or broader educational and business settings
  • A track record in developing, delivering and achieving strategic objectives
  • Experience in the overseeing of financial management, including budget setting and monitoring
  • Demonstrable experience of fundraising and/or income generation
  • Ideally knowledge and practical understanding of charitable governance and/or Code for Sports or Corporate Governance
  • Experience of complex stakeholder management leading to desired outcomes
  • Experience of successfully working with Trustees/Non-Executive Directors to maximise their input in achieving outcomes for organisations
  • Proven ability to successfully deliver key messages over various platforms i.e. within the broadcast media, written press and via verbal presentations to senior stakeholders
