Tackling Global Development Challenges with Business Solutions

Shell Foundation (SF) is a UK-registered charity that empowers underserved populations in Africa and Asia with access to clean energy products and services. A unique foundation on the global stage, we use grant, debt, and equity funding to support commercially sustainable solutions at the intersection of inclusive growth and a clean energy transition. We are independent of any company or government, with a global and independent Board of Directors. We have a mandate for innovation, and seek to be nimble, credible, and willing to take the early risks that others may not.

Our work has already improved the lives of 229 million people. We have embarked on an ambitious ten-year strategy to enable 60 million people to achieve a living income with clean energy. Many of the tools and practices to achieve that scale are either not yet developed or are embryonic.  

We are excited to be hiring for the role of Chief Impact Officer (CIO) to join our foundation’s leadership team and help us build on our success. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this role leads the foundation’s monitoring & evaluation, knowledge management and communications & advocacy teams. The right candidate will lead us to understand our impact, learn what works and what doesn’t, and then use that knowledge to improve our investment choices and communicate with others. Collaborating closely with the Chief Programme Officer, they will also lead us in business planning and continuously improve and streamline our investment process.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leveraging data to drive successful performance and communication. You will have experience leading, and mentoring high-performing and multidisciplinary teams. You will bring strategic leadership expertise gained from a broad business, and international development experience. Intricately involved in our decision-making, you will bring a track record of drawing insight from data to improve decision making and drive proven communications. You will be comfortable with evaluating risk, working with ambiguity and on novel challenges.  Above all else, you will possess an entrepreneurial spirit, showcasing a passion for our work and aligning with our mission and values.
