Diamond Light Source Ltd is the UK’s national synchrotron, and comprises a wide range of scientific, technical, professional and support staff.

A joint venture between UKRI and the Wellcome Trust, Diamond is a separately established private limited company with its own Board of Directors and UKRI and Wellcome as shareholders, and is located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.

Established in 2007, Diamond now employs over 800 staff and hosts 33 cutting-edge synchrotron-based instruments and a range of advanced electron microscopes, utilised by over 14,000 academic and industrial researchers across a wide range of disciplines such as structural biology, energy, engineering, nanoscience, and environmental sciences. In 2023, Diamond secured over £500m in funding to upgrade the facility to a state-of-the-art 4th generation synchrotron.

The Role:

Diamond is now seeking to appoint an experienced and inspirational leader as its new Chair of the Board. This influential leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future development of the facility, ensuring it continues to maximise its impact on the scientific community and beyond. The Chair will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the executive team, providing strategic direction, guidance and oversight of the organisation’s activities. The successful candidate will foster collaboration and innovation, ensuring the effective governance and strategic alignment of Diamond’s goals with its broader vision. The Chair will serve as an excellent ambassador and advocate for Diamond nationally and internationally.

Person:

The ideal candidate will possess significant executive experience and a proven record of achievement in a complex environment, such as leading or chairing a company or scientific research organisation. They will have experience acting as a senior non-executive director with expertise in governance and strategic oversight. A strong appreciation for science and its role in societal and economic development is essential, as is an understanding of the UK science and higher education funding landscape. The appointee will bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will demonstrate a passion and commitment for Diamond, its mission and ambition.

Terms and conditions:

Appointment Term: the successful candidate will be appointed for an initial term of four years, subject to annual review by the Shareholders and Board, with a possibility of reappointment.

Remuneration: £20,000 per annum. Travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed.
