TDR, the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, is seeking an outstanding new Director who can share and lead the vision and mission of their global programme of scientific collaboration that helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat diseases of poverty. 

TDR helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat diseases of poverty. It is co-sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO). 

TDR’s mission is to support effective and innovative global health research, through strengthening the research capacity of disease-affected countries, and promoting the translation of evidence into interventions that reduce the burden of infectious diseases and build resilience in the most vulnerable populations. 

The Director will be a determined, bold and passionate individual with strong credibility in leading capacity strengthening and research programmes in infectious diseases. They will play a significant role in building upon and implementing TDR’s 2024–2029 strategy whilst strengthening the research capacity in low- and middle-income countries, for local solutions to global problems. The Director plays both a leadership and partnership-building role among the cosponsors, multilateral agencies, partners and other stakeholders in integrating research on infectious diseases of poverty into the international development agenda.  

The Director is responsible for the coordination and promotion of relevant research, the development of evidence-based best practices and the provision of technical support to countries wishing to strengthen their research in infectious diseases of poverty. The successful candidate will demonstrate significant credibility and experience in scientific and strategic leadership alongside operational management gained at a global and complex organization of scale.  

The Director will bring external representation skills to be a compelling ambassador on behalf of TDR and a track record of entrepreneurship and successful partnerships, creating new and increasing existing revenue streams that will help reshape the Programme’s revenue, as well as the ability to engage and operate effectively at the highest policy and political levels. Most importantly, they will bring a deep passion and energy towards the future vision and mission of TDR and a demonstrated commitment to the success of the Special Programme, and be an authentic champion for TDR’s core values.

The role will be based at the World Health Organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.  

The salary for the role will be commensurate with the seniority of the appointment. The position is at the D2 level in the UN salary scale grid, and the package includes base salary, post adjustment and other benefits (30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children).
