We want a more equitable and sustainable world, where people everywhere can live their lives free from poverty and injustice.

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is an exceptional organisation delivering world-class research, learning and teaching that transforms the knowledge, action and leadership needed for more equitable and sustainable development globally. With a commitment to improving the lives of millions around the world, we work with hundreds of partners including governments, philanthropic foundations, non-governmental organisations, academics, and civil society to transform approaches to progressive social, political, and economic change in ways that ultimately make a difference to people’s lives. Our reputation for research and international outlook is second to none and is reflected in our performance in the latest QS World University Rankings, where we have been ranked first in the world for development studies for the seventh year in a row, together with the University of Sussex.

Following the successful leadership of Professor Melissa Leach, the Board of Trustees is seeking to appoint the next Director. This is a uniquely exciting opportunity to join IDS as it builds on a strong platform and reputation and looks ahead to the future. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Director has overall responsibility for shaping and implementing IDS’ strategy, providing intellectual inspiration and leadership to the Institute, representing the organisation externally and raising our profile through building partnerships with multiple external stakeholders. The Director will build and diversify our funding base and support and motivate a diverse group of staff to deliver excellence in all aspects of their work.

IDS encourages applications from leaders from a wide range of relevant backgrounds, particularly welcoming applicants from the global South. Successful candidates will be strongly aligned with the mission and values of IDS, with a track record of inspirational and visionary leadership as well as commitment to engaged research and teaching for real-world change. You will demonstrate a proven track record of strong academic credentials in a multifaceted organisation, and will have the academic and intellectual credibility to inspire staff from different disciplines, students and external stakeholders, and lead engaged research which influences policy and practice around the world. Excellent people and operational management skills, as well as strong financial and business acumen, will be second nature to you. Crucially, your international network of contacts in development will be exceptional, particularly from experience of working in the global South, and will have the ability to establish strong equitable working relationships with partners across the globe. An excellent understanding of the changing UK, global and geopolitical environment is essential as is an understanding of the importance of emerging new technologies and their implications for the Institute’s work.

To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter, detailing how you fulfil the role description and personal specification quoting reference 0130. The deadline for applications is 9am BST on Monday 14th October.

The salary is competitive with the market rate and negotiable depending on experience and skills.

IDS have identified two final dates, for in-person interviews. Those dates are Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 December and will take place at the Leonardo Waterfront hotel in Brighton.

IDS is committed to eliminating discrimination, and to embedding and supporting equality, diversity and inclusion among our workforce, in our work and in all our activities. We welcome applications from all sections of the community, irrespective of background, belief or identity and particularly encourage applications from groups which are underrepresented at IDS.
