Dynamic and uniquely respected, the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is a leading independent global think tank on international development and humanitarian issues, based in London. Through the excellence of its research and pioneering thought leadership, ODI influences policy for development throughout the world.

ODI is seeking to appoint an exceptional Director of Public Affairs and Communication to lead its communications strategy and actions, to innovate new forms of public communications in the development sphere, and to develop its external relations and influence. Reporting into the Executive Director, the Director of Public Affairs and Communications will enhance the influence of ODI’s research on development policy and practice. S/he will ensure a clear and powerful voice is communicated for affecting change at a global, regional and national level, and will maintain ODI’s position at the forefront of global debates on development. In addition, the Director of Public Affairs and Communications and will lead the development of effective corporate communications, research programme communications and public affairs, and make sure ODI harnesses the power of digital channels.

This role offers a unique challenge for an individual with a genuine passion and commitment to inform policy and practice towards the reduction of poverty, the alleviation of suffering and the achievement of sustainable livelihoods around the world. The successful candidate will bring extensive policy influencing, communications and media experience with a global perspective. They will be familiar with current trends in international mass media, communications, digital innovation and public affairs, in addition to having a passion for ODI’s personal integrity and inspirational leadership. S/he will be a motivational leader, with strong interpersonal skills as well as the confidence to lead, inspire and motivate both directly managed and cross organisational teams. In addition, you will be a skilled decision-maker with the proven ability to influence and build trust at the most senior levels, and bring a network of contacts across print, broadcast and digital media, politics and thought-leaders in the sector.
