The University of St Andrews stands for quality. We are world-leading, diverse, digital, entrepreneurial, and sustainable, and we put the student experience at the heart of all we do. As one of the premier institutions of learning in the world, we rank second in both the Guardian University Guide 2025 and The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025.
The University now seeks to appoint a successor to Professor David Crossman CBE who will retire at the end of 2024. This post will provide leadership to the School of Medicine, provide advice on strategy in medicine and the running of the School to the Principal’s Office and represent the University of St Andrews externally both nationally and internationally. The Dean will have overall responsibility for maintaining and further developing the School’s international research profile as well as its highly regarded educational activities, including degree courses that are either awarding a primary medical qualification or contributing to a primary medical qualification (PMQ). The Dean of Medicine is expected to maintain close links with the GMC and be the St Andrews representative at the Medical Schools Councils of the UK and the Scottish Medical Schools Board. Discussions are at an advanced stage for the Dean of Medicine to be the University representative on the board of NHS Fife. He or she will relish the opportunity to work in a thriving environment, which meshes high standards with a genuinely collegiate environment.
The successful candidate will be medically qualified and may come from any branch of academic medicine. The incoming Dean will have a strong, internationally recognised track record of research and an ambition to develop a clear research strategy for the School. They will hold a Chair of Medicine alongside the appointment as Dean.
