The University of Sussex is one of the UK’s foremost higher education institutions. From the outset, the University has adopted an individualistic culture and taken an independent viewpoint, valuing creativity, interdisciplinarity, , international engagement and excellence in research and education. Whatever your preconceptions, Sussex will surprise you. The University is consistently ranked amongst the top 20 universities in the UK, has unparalleled commitments to social mobility, outstanding rates of graduate employability, and world leading research areas which have strong translational impact and societal benefit.

The School of Life Sciences is the largest School in the University in terms of research activity, with an annual research income of £20 million and around 70 research and teaching faculty. The original School of Biological Sciences, founded by John Maynard Smith FRS, trained some of the world’s leading biologists and biomedical scientists, and was a beacon of innovation and creativity in its integrated approach to research and teaching. The School has since evolved to further encourage interdisciplinarity in scholarly activity, housing Subject Groups in Neuroscience, Evolution, Behaviour and Environment, Genome Damage and Stability, Biochemistry and Biomedicine and Chemistry. The School also boasts a number of research centres including the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre, established in 2011.

The University now seeks to appoint a Professor in Medicinal Chemistry and a Professor of Molecular Pharmacology who will play a leading role in the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre (SDDC) within the School of Life Sciences. The Centre’s close linkages with the Genome Damage and Stability Centre and Sussex Neuroscience allow for translational researchers to develop molecular targets in close synergy with basic researchers and the School aspires to strengthen these ties going forward. The appointees will join one of the most successful drug discovery outlets in the UK with a total research income exceeding £25 million.

The University welcomes applications from outstanding individuals to develop an internationally recognised research programme that builds upon and complements existing activities within the SDDC. The successful applicants would also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a new School research strategy with a strong translational outlook.
