Appointment of Head of Development & Partnerships

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is a young and international institute dedicated to cutting-edge research and graduate education in the physical, mathematical, computer, and life sciences, chemistry, and astrophysics. The institute fosters interdisciplinary interaction between scientists from all countries and is committed to the highest international academic standards, integrity, equality, and diversity on campus, as well as respect and recognition for all. The institute is funded by public and private grants. ISTA has grown in scientific expertise, academic staff, and infrastructure with secured funding, currently hosting almost 90 research groups, with the aim of accommodating up to 150 world-class research groups by 2036.

ISTA seeks to appoint an inspiring leader to further develop its fundraising and partnership activities to support its mission of advancing science and education. The successful individual will have a proven track record in fundraising, strategic partnership-building, and donor relations, as well as a deep understanding of the philanthropic landscape. They will lead a dedicated team, nurture relationships with international and domestic donors, and collaborate closely with ISTA’s leadership to secure financial resources that enable the institute’s ambitious growth plans.

In this critical role, the Head of Development & Partnerships will align, strengthen, and expand ISTA’s global fundraising initiatives while enhancing the institute’s visibility and reputation. The individual will provide strategic advice on philanthropic opportunities and represent ISTA to diverse stakeholders, ensuring consistent alignment with the institute’s values and goals. Reporting directly to the Division Head of Communications, Events, and Science Education, the successful candidate will work at the executive level and closely interact with ISTA’s leadership.

Candidates will be strongly motivated by ISTA’s mission and vision and will bring extensive experience in developing and managing strategic fundraising plans in a complex, international context. Creativity, innovation, and a passion for research are essential, as is the ability to inspire and lead a team. Proven experience in a senior fundraising role, preferably in a research, academic, or philanthropic environment, is required, alongside excellent communication and networking skills in English (German is advantageous). The role also demands flexibility, strategic thinking, and the ability to travel internationally.
