Director, Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein

The newly opened Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at the National University of Singapore (one of the world’s leading universities, ranked first in Asia, and 8th and 17th globally by QS and THE respectively) is the first of its kind in Asia. It has been set up to advance research in alternative proteins, drive global food security and accelerate innovation in the region. With a US$30 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund, the Centre will spearhead interdisciplinary research and innovation to meet the nutritional needs of the growing global population. Research at the centre will be led initially by 23 scientists from institutes including NUS, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Institute of Technology, and ETH Zurich. The NUS Centre joins similar Bezos Centres at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom and North Carolina State University in the United States, forming a global network dedicated to advancing sustainable protein research.

The Centre is now inviting applications for the role of its Director. The Centre’s primary focus areas include microalgae and biomass fermentation, supported by complementary research into cultivated meat and plant-based technologies. The Centre will also integrate cross-cutting platforms covering nutrition science, safety, and consumer acceptance in its research. These efforts are strategically aligned to produce next-generation hybrid proteins that are affordable, nutritious, and widely accepted. The expectations on the Director are substantive and will require a world class research scientist or translational research scientist with an outstanding track record in advancing research efforts that are developed and implemented in close collaboration across scientific, industry, community and policy stakeholders and that address both consumer needs and industry demands. The successful candidate will be passionate about nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators; fluent in fostering discussions and collaborations across partners and they will bring a deep commitment to contributing to strategies that help expedite the adoption of sustainable proteins across the region and worldwide.
