Romanian-American Foundation (RAF)

Appointment of President

Helping to pave the way for a prosperous and inclusive Romania where innovation, opportunity, and civic participation thrive.

Established in 2009 and headquartered in Bucharest, the Romanian-American Foundation (RAF) is a philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing Romania’s economic and social development. RAF’s mission is to strengthen and promote the conditions for a sustainable market economy and democratic society that provides access to opportunity for all segments of Romanian society.

RAF plays a pioneering role in Romania's emerging philanthropic landscape by proactively identifying, cultivating, and empowering partners to work toward its long-term goals. RAF’s approach emphasizes impact through co-creation, rigorous due diligence, and capacity building, engaging with over 100 partners annually. RAF operates like a venture fund, investing in initiatives with strong potential for replication and broad impact. It provides grants and program-related investments complemented by ongoing technical assistance, all while maintaining political neutrality and ensuring independence and sustainability through robust operational practices.

RAF is now seeking a new President to succeed Roxana Vitan following her distinguished tenure and upcoming retirement. This is a unique opportunity to lead one of Romania’s most respected and impactful philanthropic organizations. The ideal candidate will bring strategic vision, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to fostering Romania’s civic and economic development. With an endowment-backed foundation, a high-performing team, and a strong network of partners, the incoming President will be poised to build on RAF’s legacy and navigate the evolving challenges and opportunities in Romania’s dynamic landscape.

In this role, RAF is seeking a proven executive with experience in philanthropy, civil society, or related fields. The ideal candidate will possess international expertise, with a familiarity with Romania and Eastern Europe. Strategic vision, financial acumen and cross-sectoral experience are essential, along with effective communication, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement skills. The candidate should demonstrate deep commitment to RAF’s mission, cultural and political sensitivity, and the ability to foster relationships across diverse sectors. Romanians, including from the Romanian diaspora, or expats with strong ties to Romania, are encouraged to apply.
