The Royal Hospital Chelsea has been home to Army veterans for over 300 years. As the residence of the iconic Chelsea Pensioners, it provides a unique community of care, camaraderie and support in recognition of their service to the nation. Today, around 300 men and women live here, including those who have served in conflicts such as World War II, Korea, the Falkland Islands, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. Our aim is to ensure exemplary support for our veteran community while safeguarding this remarkable institution for future generations.  

We are now seeking an exceptional Director of Development, Marketing and Communications to play a crucial role in raising the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s profile and securing the income necessary to deliver our ambitions. Reporting to the CEO, the Director will provide strategic leadership across fundraising, marketing and communications, ensuring these functions are aligned to support the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s mission and values. This pivotal role requires a confident and experienced leader who can shape and deliver strategies to grow income and extend our reach. You will oversee major donor engagement, corporate partnerships, fundraising campaigns and supporter programmes, working closely with colleagues and stakeholders to foster relationships that generate meaningful support, while protecting our brand and intellectual property. 

We welcome applications from professionals with a proven track record in securing substantial income growth, ideally within a complex organisation. You will have experience cultivating high-value relationships with major donors, corporates and key partners, and be skilled in developing and executing effective marketing and communications strategies. As a collaborative and inspiring leader, you will engage and motivate teams while building strong internal and external relationships. 

Exceptional communication and ambassadorial skills are essential, with the ability to represent the Royal Hospital Chelsea to donors, media and senior stakeholders. A solid understanding of fundraising regulation, IP law and compliance is required, alongside a working knowledge of Public Affairs. Most importantly, you will demonstrate a deep commitment to the values of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and a genuine passion for supporting the veteran community.

The role is based in London with hybrid working arrangements in place. The salary is commensurate with the seniority of the role. 

Perrett Laver will conduct an executive search process in parallel with the public advertisement of the role. Longlisted candidates will be invited to interview with Perrett Laver in the weeks commencing 28th April and 5th May and the Selection Panel will subsequently meet to decide upon a final shortlist for the post at the end of May following which, visits and interviews with the RHC will take place in June.
