Applications are invited for the appointment of an inaugural Deputy Dean of the International Business School Suzhou at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

Founded in 2013 and currently home to approximately 100 staff and 3,500 students, the International Business School Suzhou has recently been awarded EQUIS accreditation, making it the youngest business school globally to acquire this prestigious award in under two years. This comes just two years after receiving AACSB accreditation. The Business School seeks to become an international leader in business education and research. Structurally, the School comprises three Divisions, namely Accountancy and Finance, Economics, and Management.

The position of Deputy Dean is crucial to the effective operation of IBSS at XJTLU with IBSS being fundamental to the University’s vision and mission for research-led teaching. The post-holder will play a central role in ensuring the development of IBSS within the University’s 10 Year Strategic Plan.

The Deputy Dean is expected to play a leadership role in the University as well as IBSS and will have excellent communication skills and relate to all the staff in the School (from clerical, and technical to professorial). They will play a role in staff management, assist the Dean with the budget and planning process and will strengthen the School’s broader research interests in areas related to business.  The post-holder’s own personal research accomplishment will be excellent with a track record of high-quality publications, significant grant income and demonstrable evidence of engagement with the wider academic community. The Deputy Dean will report directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for the entire operation of IBSS and to the Dean of IBSS to undertake research in their area of specialisation.

XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the University now has 10,000 students studying on campus. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development in science and technology, and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

XJTLU has two campuses: the original and well-established campus in the higher education town of Suzhou Industrial Park [SIP] and a new campus in nearby Taicang. Both campuses are well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou (which includes Taicang) is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and the SIP has a higher GDP per capita than the UK. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there is a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.

Informal enquiries regarding the Deputy Dean appointment should be directed to the University’s appointed advisors, Perrett Laver: online at https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/, quoting reference number 3688, or by contacting Kimberley Moyo at Kimberley.moyo@perrettlaver.com / +44 (0) 207 340 6282.

The deadline for applications for this position is Monday 20th August. Applications will be considered by the University at the end of August. Provisionally shortlisted candidates will be invited forward for a Skype interview with key University leaders, with a final shortlist invited to attend a campus visit in Suzhou.
