Applications are invited for the appointment of a Professor within the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

The Department of Urban Planning and Design (UPD) at XJTLU was established in 2009, and within less than a decade, it has grown into a truly international Department that marries the best of urban planning and design education from around the world to the specificities of practice in a rapidly urbanised China. It is one of the largest planning education institutions in China and currently home to 18 staff and over 200 students.

The incoming Professor of Urban Planning and Design - in addition to being an accomplished academic within a relevant field of expertise - will lead on developing research activities, strategies and practices across the Department and will have a keen interest in mentoring and supporting other academics in their research endeavours. The post-holder will strengthen the Department’s broader research interests in all areas related to urban planning and design, particularly areas related to China and European planning law, systems and practices; urban economics; planning theory; environmental planning and management; and spatial analysis and visualisation.

The University welcomes applications from candidates with cross-disciplinary expertise in areas cognizant to the Department. Individuals with expertise in urban sustainability, urban regeneration, application of big data analytics and innovative technologies to urban planning and design are particularly welcome. Real world planning and design experience is considered to be an asset.

XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the University now has 10,000 students studying on campus. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development in science and technology, and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

XJTLU has two campuses: the original and well-established campus in the higher education town of Suzhou Industrial Park [SIP] and a new campus in nearby Taicang. Both campuses are well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou (which includes Taicang) is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and the SIP has a higher GDP per capita than the UK. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum, attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there is a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.
