The Role and Profile

TNO is now seeking to appoint a Principal Scientist to be the scientific and technical lead of its Nano-Optomechatronic Instruments (NOMI) programme. NOMI has expertise in mechatronics and optics and develops proof of concepts of optomechatronic instruments.  Adding advanced control and data processing makes the instruments smart. Through their close relationship with industry, NOMI has strong application and domain knowledge, and focuses on solving specific, market-related challenges. True to TNO’s mission to maximise impact on society and industry, NOMI technology leads to real-world applications.

The Principal Scientist will be responsible for setting and driving the strategic roadmapping and strategic technical priorities for the NOMI programme. Having a strong understanding of emerging technologies and market-driven questions, s/he will be a key contact for clients and partners, acting as the technical sparring partner for these key stakeholders. The Principal Scientist will have an important role in the acquisition of new projects and attracting (public and private) funding.

The Principal Scientist will act as a source of expertise, and will have practical technical expertise, a strong scientific profile as well as business acumen to oversee the development of new technologies and applications. S/he will have a pioneering mentality, and the ability to connect technology with market and socially driven challenges to develop and drive an ambitious vision that cuts across disciplines. With good communication skills, energy, creativity and a boundless curiosity, the Principal Scientist will be able to convince and inspire colleagues, partners and clients.
