The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking to appoint an Associate / Full Professor of Design Automation and Design Optimisation for Construction and Operation, to join its Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Based in Trondheim, the Faculty of Engineering is one of Norway’s primary research organisations in engineering science and technology, and the country’s major provider of engineering education. Through interdisciplinary research and industrial partnerships, the Faculty and its eight Departments cover four strategic research domains. Its Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has broad interdisciplinary expertise in the fields of logistics, machine design, product development, materials science and risk and reliability of complex systems. Through its strong connection with national and international industry, the Department focuses on development, optimisation and improvement of industrial processes and production systems.

The Role and Profile

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is now seeking to appoint an outstanding (Associate) Professor with expertise in the area of Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) and its application in the automation and optimisation of processes related to the operation of plants, buildings, facilities and the realisation of products and infrastructure to join its Design, Analysis and Manufacturing group.

The Professor will demonstrate leadership, innovation and excellence in teaching and research in KBE, including multidiscipline design, Digital Twins, Design for Manufacturing, etc. The Professor is responsible for establishing and building a portfolio of research projects that are cross-disciplinary and cross-industry with strong links to engineering and computer science, BIM and machine learning and AI.

In addition to involvement in applied research, the Professor is responsible for education and student supervision at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level.

This Professorship is sponsored by industrial partners, who will contribute actively with industrial cases and provide access to relevant facilities and resources as seen relevant for the research. The Professor is expected to establish a knowledge-sharing program with the sponsors.

Appointment Process

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver, who will support the Department at NTNU in helping to identify a field of qualified candidates and assisting in the assessment of candidates against the requirements for the role.

Applications will be considered by the selection committee in early November and the applications of initially shortlisted candidates will be considered by external peer reviewers. Candidates will be ranked by the reviewers and then finally shortlisted candidates will be invited to give presentations and formally interview at NTNU. Selection of and negotiations with preferred candidates will take place thereafter.
