APC Microbiome Ireland, hosted by UCC, is the world’s largest microbiome research centre and bridges the gap between excellent basic research and translational commercialisation through industry partnerships. An internationally leading SFI Research Institute, it links academia with industry and society through excellence in research, education, and outreach in gastrointestinal health. APC is ranked 4th in the world for microbiome research, 1st for probiotic research, 1st for bacteriocin research, and 5th for gut-related disease research. In the last five years, the amount of competitive research funding which has been won has totalled over €70 million, with an additional €29 million from industry collaborations. APC has spun out 3 companies that now employ over 50 researchers.
APC Microbiome Ireland is now seeking to appoint a new Director with the expertise, ambition and vision to lead this highly successful research institute. The successful appointee will be an internationally renowned researcher, from an academic, clinical or industry background, who is considered a global leader in their area of research. The ideal candidate will combine excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to inspire, innovate and influence across a range of national and international organisations and stakeholders. This post is a critical one for APC and Ireland as a whole and will provide a unique, career-defining opportunity for an ambitious candidate.
The appointment will be made for an initial term of five years with the possibility of continuation in office for a second term subject to a review process. At the end of the tenure of the Director, the University may, in light of the qualifications, experience and performance of the holder, offer continued employment in another academic or service role. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
For appropriately qualified candidates with an active clinical background, provision may be made to provide access to continue clinical practice within the South Southwest Hospital Group (SSWHG).

Closing date for applications is 12 Noon (GMT) on Monday 26th November 2018. Applications will be assessed by the university-appointed Selection Committee in mid-December. Candidates selected for interview will be welcome to attend the University and visit APC over the course of January and February 2019. Formal interviews including a presentation are scheduled for 4th March 2019.
